Fit for purpose and fit for budget

27 Jun 2025

There are a wide range of factors that influence planning community amenities such as sports parks, playgrounds or metro city locations. Regulatory considerations, demographic diversity and accessibility all come into play. Often aesthetics and cost are at the forefront of the decision-making but whatever the driver might be, a 'positive and impactful result for the community' must be at the heart of any planning decision.

Some of the considerations when planning a new public toilet facility may include traffic and usage statistics, design principles that help to create a safe and hygienic space, social inclusion priorities and environmental impact. In addition, there are more practical considerations such as the level of automation and other special features that add to the user experience.

Project planning

Exeloo works with each customer to deliver automated public toilets that are built to last and fit for purpose. Our modular system also incorporates customisable features that keep budget sensitivities in mind. Our design service is free and this, along with our experience and specialist knowledge, helps us guide planning and design considerations for the best result.

After almost 35 years as a specialist provider in public toilet design and manufacture there is very little that we have not come across and we know that the value of an Exeloo toilet lies in the flexibility of our modular design.

Our early involvement and consultative approach helps our customer to simplify complex projects. Our team is able to assist with decisions that might include:

  1. Product Scope - we help to verify project specifications based on occupancy data and determine the best model and floor plan
  2. Degree of automation - from low-tech manual designs to full automation with auto door opening, pre-programmed locking door systems and cubicle auto-wash functions
  3. Location / User needs - crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a design philosophy we bring to every project
  4. Social Inclusion - community diversity and accessibility needs are often central in the decision process for progressive installations
  5. Customised use - changing rooms, a family room, showers, even referee rooms and kiosks can be included in our prefabricated modules
  6. Accessory items – these can have a huge impact for public places and use to enhance the user experience, consider outdoor showers at the beach or pools, water fountains and dog bowl item for dog parks
  7. Aesthetics – Blend in or stand out with a range of cladding and external design features that can be tailored to meet almost any environmental design

The value of prefabrication

Exeloo toilet units are manufactured off-site in our West Auckland factory.

Prefabrication reduces project costs, has environmental advantages and shortens installation timelines, no matter where the final destination.

The deployment and installation system is fast and the “whole of life” value can be seen in many projects where the unit can be re-located if the needs or the use of the public space changes.

There’s no such thing as standard

While automation is our signature, we match the degree of automation to the needs of each project with a clear intent behind every feature. We offer floor plans for standalone units or units that are integrated seamlessly into a wider building design, and have a range of standard models that can be customised from a menu of options.

All six of our Exeloo design models are available in three levels: Standard (manual units); Semi-Automated; and Fully-Automated systems that feature fully automatic doors and automated cubicle refresh systems.

Operational efficiency

User statistics available on our Semi and Fully Automated units help with the cost/benefit analysis and are able to track user-profiles to improve operational efficiency.

Independent studies show that well maintained Exeloo Automatic Public Toilets have more than half the operational cost of traditional concrete block public toilets. The ability to meter consumables, cubicle refresh and nighttime locking features all contribute to significantly reducing operational costs.

When the project’s capital cost, depreciation and whole of life operational costs are considered, Exeloo units perform far better financially than traditional public toilets.

Preventative maintenance

We stand behind our products. Exeloo has introduced a Preventative Maintenance Programme (PMP) where we pair the council-client with a regionally located Exeloo Accredited Service Agent (ASA) to make regular fleet inspections of their Exeloo public toilet fleet (typically quarterly). This dramatically improves the product life cycle, reduces repair costs due to vandalism and protects the community with safer and more hygienic public toilets.
