Innovation at Sports Parks facilities add value to all
21 Feb 2025
Exeloo have been designing and manufacturing prefabricated public toilets since 1991 – we are proud of our kiwi heritage and the relentless pursuit of excellence that fuels our business and creates loyal and valued customer partnerships.
Innovation has been a hallmark of our culture since our very first day. Early adopting customers partnered with Exeloo to provide their communities with a more consistent and networked public toilet offering.
This innovative approach is part of our DNA and has helped us respond quickly to changes in market trends. Very quickly Exeloo went international with the first units exported to Australia in 1992. The range started to cater for other public space segments such as transit and metropolitan street projects. Today a growing appetite for a prefabricated approach to construction has fuelled new products to meet the needs of sports parks.
Our can-do attitude responded to requests for changing facilities and we have evolved the Exeloo product range to include modular changing rooms, hot showers, outdoor showers, referee rooms, family rooms and large format toilet units.
Public toilets with changing rooms
While not a new concept, these buildings have historically been constructed from the ground up on-site. We’ve always said there’s no such thing as ‘standard’. Our design team has matched the features needed in a sports park with a clear intent behind every feature.
The large-format prefabricated units with changing room facilities have full hot shower features as well as enough room to house entire football teams! We draw on over 30 years of experience in prefabricated construction systems to deliver fully formed buildings that in most cases, are ready to plug and play.
A unit in Beachlands, Auckland was one of our first large footprint modular toilets with changing room facilities included. This was installed in 2021 and the installation was captured on video to highlight the rapid installation.
Since then, there have been further developments and exciting projects, including MacLean Park in Kapiti Coast which received acclaim for its unique art mural and met a community need for an upgraded amenity block that included an adult accessible change room. The large format unit with seven public toilets was constructed and shipped to Kapiti Coast and installed within a few days.
A sustainable sports park
Another recent large format toilet and changing room facility was installed was at Te Kori Scott Point in Hobsonville, Auckland. Scott Point has been designed by Auckland Council to be New Zealand’s first fully sustainable sports park with an aim to achieve the highest ISCA:IS accreditation. The IS rating scheme is Australia and New Zealand’s only comprehensive rating system for evaluating the economic, social and environmental performance of infrastructure assets.
Exeloo partnered with Auckland Council to deliver this first-of-a-kind large-scale facility, that includes two big sports changing rooms, a referee room, storeroom and four toilets.
Solar-powered automation
The design aspects in the unit’s construction and operational performance support the sustainability objectives of the park, most importantly utilising solar power that generates the automation. The system’s back-up power is fed back to the grid. As well as utilising solar power, this unit was built with a range of 100% recyclable materials and is fitted with filter and sensor systems that help measure waste and minimise emissions. Another important initiative included the option to use Māori voice messaging in the toilet as well as English.
Stage 2 of this park is now under development – once complete, it will be the pride of the community of Hobsonville!
Room for the whole team!
The Exeloo team ended 2024 on a high with the installation of their largest unit yet - in Becroft Park, Wairau Valley, Auckland. The sports park is nearing completion and we will share further information once opened to the public. This Exeloo facility comprises two large changing rooms with six hot water showers in each, six toilets, two referee changing rooms with two showers, and a large storeroom with roller doors.
Not just a loo
Another 2024 installation that highlights Exeloo is not just about loos, is a unit we designed for the lakefront at Mangakino, a popular and pretty lake, frequented by wakeboarders and swimmers.
It’s a quad cubicle with external shower, shelter down one side, bench seating, a generous roof extension for shade and a drinking fountain with dog bowl and defibrillator! In addition, a storeroom was included that is used by council operations to store equipment used in the park.
Flexibility by design
“We are proud of our heritage of innovation” says Craig van Asch, Managing Director, “The team continues to push the design boundaries to meet our community’s constantly evolving needs. We step forward each time we complete a new project and strive to usher new ways to deliver our products and create even more flexibility for customers in New Zealand but also for our customers in Australia and the USA”
